Simple habits that reduce lead exposure without making the workbench intimidating.
Start with the room
Use a dedicated, easy-to-clean work surface. Keep food and drinks away, provide ventilation for solder fumes, and prevent dust from spreading into living spaces.
Work cleanly
Use wet cleaning or a HEPA-filter vacuum—never dry sweep or use compressed air. After lead work, use a lead-removal hand-cleaning product rather than relying on ordinary soap alone.
Protect the household
Store lead, solder, patina, and chemicals in labeled closed containers. Keep contaminated clothing, tools, and scrap out of living spaces, and keep children and pets away from the studio.
