Reinforcement basics
Use panel size, design lines, installation, and support conditions to decide when more structure is needed.
Practical referenceReviewed August 2026
Start with the installation
A cabinet insert, hanging panel, door lite, and exterior architectural window experience different loads. Design for the real opening.
Use the design
Continuous lines can become hinges. Break them thoughtfully, connect reinforcement to the perimeter, and avoid concentrating stress at one joint.
Choose a system
Internal reinforcement, steel bars, tie wires, perimeter channels, and external supports each solve different problems. Compatibility matters.
Escalate important work
Large, overhead, exterior, historic, or safety-critical installations should be reviewed by an experienced fabricator or qualified professional.
